The Controller is the piece that turns a drawer full of ordinary household gadgets into things you can actually use. On its own it is already a talking clock, a set of timers, an alarm and a voice memo recorder. Connected to an IKONN scale, thermometer, tape measure or sensor, it reads out every measurement the moment it is taken, in whichever of the supported languages you have chosen. It is built to be operated without looking at it. The case is 123 mm long and 83 g, so it sits in one hand and works under the thumb. Six raised rubber buttons sit in a shape your fingers learn in a day: a two way rocker for volume with a plus above a minus, a square cancel button marked X, a rounded select button, and a round help button marked with a question mark. Two slide switches on the left edge carry different numbers of raised dots, so you can tell them apart by touch alone. Press the help button at any point and the Controller explains where you are and what the buttons will do next. Sound comes out of a speaker set into the front, or through the 3.5 mm jack on the bottom edge next to the USB-C charging socket. The jack matters more than it looks: it takes ordinary headphones for a private reading, and it is the route people use with a neck loop for a hearing aid or cochlear implant. Deafblind users pair the Controller through the myIKONN app to a braille display instead of listening at all.
