Definitions for the abbreviations and terms used across the marketplace.
Accessibility
- AAA— Stands for: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Level AAA
- The highest WCAG conformance level. Targets users with the widest range of disabilities. Most sites cannot meet every AAA criterion across all content; the marketplace targets AAA where applicable.
- ARIA— Stands for: Accessible Rich Internet Applications
- A W3C specification of attributes that authors can add to HTML so assistive technology can understand custom widgets like menus, dialogs, and tabs.
- AT— Stands for: Assistive Technology
- A device, software, or service that helps a person with a disability perform tasks they would otherwise find difficult — for example, screen readers, braille displays, head pointers, or eye-tracking systems.
- RNIB— Stands for: Royal National Institute of Blind People
- A UK charity supporting people with sight loss. RNIB partners with the marketplace on accessibility reviews and certified-vendor programmes.
- SR— Stands for: Screen Reader
- Software that converts on-screen content into synthesised speech or braille output. Common screen readers include NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack.
- WCAG— Stands for: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
- The W3C standard for making web content accessible. Version 2.2 is the current target for this marketplace.
Authentication & security
- MFA— Stands for: Multi-Factor Authentication
- A login method that requires more than one factor — typically a password plus a one-time code from an authenticator app or email — to reduce account-takeover risk.
- OTP— Stands for: One-Time Password
- A code that can be used only once, typically valid for a few minutes, to verify identity for a specific action.
- TOTP— Stands for: Time-based One-Time Password
- A short numeric code that an authenticator app generates and rotates every 30 seconds. Used as the second factor in MFA.
Shipping & couriers
- Aramex— Stands for: Aramex (Middle East courier)
- A Middle East courier used for shipping within the GCC and Levant. Provides cash-on-delivery and proof-of-delivery options.
- DHL— Stands for: DHL (Deutsche Post DHL Group, courier)
- An international courier used for tracked shipping outside the Middle East. Delivery-time and tracking guarantees are part of the courier's API.
Compliance & regulation
- EAA— Stands for: European Accessibility Act
- EU Directive 2019/882, mandatory from 28 June 2025, requiring digital products and services sold in the EU to meet accessibility requirements.
- GDPR— Stands for: General Data Protection Regulation
- EU Regulation 2016/679 governing personal-data handling. Applies to anyone processing the data of EU residents, regardless of where the company is based.
- KYC— Stands for: Know Your Customer
- Verification of a customer's identity, used here for vendor onboarding to prevent fraud and money laundering.
- VPAT— Stands for: Voluntary Product Accessibility Template
- An ITI-published reporting template vendors use to document a product's accessibility against the WCAG, Section 508, and EN 301 549 standards.
Technology
- FAQ— Stands for: Frequently Asked Questions
- A list of common questions and their answers, kept on a help page so customers can resolve simple queries without contacting support.
- OS— Stands for: Operating System
- The software that manages a computer or mobile device's hardware and provides services to applications — for example, Windows, macOS, iOS, Android.
- URL— Stands for: Uniform Resource Locator
- The web address of a page or resource.
